Tooth Extractions

When extraction is appropriate, we explain the procedure, recovery, and any replacement options before treatment.

When a tooth needs removing

When Extraction Is the Answer

We consider ways to preserve a natural tooth when that is appropriate. Extraction may be recommended if a tooth cannot be predictably restored, or occasionally as part of an orthodontic treatment plan. We’ll explain why it is recommended and discuss alternatives.

Planning for your comfort

Comfort During Treatment
  • Local anesthetic, with comfort checked before treatment
  • Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV conscious sedation when appropriate after a health review
  • You may feel pressure or movement; tell us about discomfort so we can pause and adjust
  • Clear written aftercare and our number for any questions
  • A discussion of whether replacement is needed before removal, including the options and timing

What to expect

The Process
1

Exam and X-Ray

An examination and appropriate imaging help us assess the roots and surrounding bone, review alternatives, and plan the extraction.

2

Numbing and Removal

After numbing and any appropriate, available comfort support, the tooth is loosened and removed gently. We discuss socket preservation grafting when it may be appropriate.

3

Aftercare

Gauze, simple written instructions, and clear guidance: protect the clot, skip straws and smoking, take it easy for a day.

4

Replacement

If replacement is needed, we explain the timing and stages for an implant, bridge, or partial denture, including any temporary option.

Why the empty space matters

Replacement Planning

Depending on the tooth and your bite, a gap may affect chewing or allow nearby teeth to move. Some extractions, such as wisdom teeth or selected orthodontic extractions, do not require replacement. We’ll discuss whether replacement or socket preservation is appropriate. See your replacement options.

Common questions about extractions

Does getting a tooth pulled hurt?
We use local anesthetic and check your comfort before beginning. Pressure or movement is expected; tell us if you feel discomfort so we can pause and adjust.
How soon can I go back to work?
Your recovery time depends on the procedure, your health, and the kind of work you do. Follow the activity restrictions provided for your treatment.
What does an extraction cost?
Fees depend on the tooth and procedure. Your plan may help cover extraction; we’ll check benefits and explain your estimated share before treatment.
