Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A fast-acting option to help reduce dental anxiety. After nitrous alone, most patients recover quickly and can drive once our team confirms they are ready.

Understanding the basics

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas,” is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nose mask. It can help you relax within minutes while you remain awake and able to respond. When treatment ends, we give you oxygen and check your recovery before you leave. Local anesthetic may still be needed to numb the treatment area.

What to expect

The Process
1

Settle In

A small mask rests on your nose. You breathe normally while we adjust the blend. The sedative is inhaled, although dental treatment may still involve local anesthetic injections.

2

Feel the Calm

You may notice relaxation, light-headedness, or tingling within a few minutes. Tell us how you feel so we can adjust treatment as needed.

3

Treatment, Comfortably

You remain awake and able to respond. Let us know if you feel uncomfortable; we can adjust or stop the nitrous.

4

Recovery Check

We give you oxygen and check that you have recovered. Most patients can drive after nitrous alone once cleared, but your dental procedure may still require recovery time.

Health review and monitoring

Safety

Nitrous has a long history of use in dentistry, but it is not suitable for everyone. We review your health, medications, and ability to breathe through your nose, and explain potential side effects such as nausea or dizziness. Tell us if you are pregnant or have any change in your health before treatment.

Common questions about nitrous oxide

Will I be unconscious?
Nitrous is intended to help you relax while remaining awake and able to respond. Tell us if its effects feel uncomfortable.
Can my child have nitrous?
It may be appropriate for your child. We review their health, treatment needs, and ability to breathe comfortably through the nose mask before recommending it.
Can I really drive afterward?
Most patients can drive after nitrous alone once our team confirms recovery. Other sedatives, your procedure, or your health may change that advice.
