Oral Conscious Sedation

Prescribed medication taken by mouth may help selected patients feel more relaxed during dental care. We review your health and explain preparation, monitoring, and recovery before treatment.

Understanding the basics

What Is Oral Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation uses medication taken by mouth according to your treatment instructions. The aim is to reduce anxiety while keeping you responsive. You may feel drowsy, and your memory of the visit can vary. We review your health and medications before recommending an option and explain its benefits, risks, and recovery requirements.

The benefits of oral sedation

Why Patients Choose It
  • May help patients whose anxiety makes dental treatment difficult
  • Memory of the appointment may be reduced, but varies by person
  • The sedative is taken as a pill; local anesthetic injections may still be needed
  • May make longer appointments more manageable when clinically appropriate
  • Medication selected after a review of your health and current prescriptions

What to expect

The Process
1

Consultation First

We review your health history and medications, choose the right sedative and dose, and give you simple written instructions.

2

Take Your Pill

Take only the prescribed medication, at the time and dose instructed. Arrange your escort before the appointment and do not drive after taking the sedative.

3

Monitored Treatment

We monitor you throughout treatment. The aim is to keep you relaxed and responsive, with the medication and treatment plan chosen for your needs.

4

Home to Rest

A responsible adult takes you home and stays with you as instructed. Recovery time varies. Follow your written restrictions even if you feel alert.

What you'll need to arrange

Safety and Logistics

Arrange a responsible adult to take you to and from the appointment and stay with you for the period specified in your instructions. Do not drive, work, drink alcohol, or make important decisions until the restriction period has passed. Follow the eating and medication instructions provided; do not change doses or add medicines on your own.

Common questions about oral sedation

Will I be asleep?
This is conscious sedation, not general anesthesia. The aim is to help you relax while remaining responsive. We monitor your response throughout treatment.
Will I remember anything?
Some patients remember less of the visit, while others remember more. A lack of memory is not guaranteed.
Is oral sedation safe?
Screening, appropriate dosing, and monitoring help reduce risks. Oral sedation can cause side effects and interactions with other medicines. We review your history and explain the risks and precautions for your treatment.
