The foundation of a healthy smile

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry brings together professional cleanings, thorough exams, appropriate X-rays, and a home routine you can keep up with. Finding a problem early gives us more ways to manage it, sometimes before a filling is needed. At Highland Dental, we'll explain what we see and help you choose the next step. We care for families in Mt. Juliet and nearby communities.

What to expect

Your Checkup, Step by Step
1

Health Review

Medications and conditions like diabetes and heart disease affect your mouth — and vice versa. We start every visit by understanding the whole you.

2

Professional Cleaning

Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar above and below the gumline, polishes your teeth, and screens your gum health with gentle measurements.

3

Doctor's Exam

The doctor examines your teeth, gums, bite, and any existing dental work — with photos on screen so you can see exactly what we see.

4

Your Care Plan

We’ll explain any findings, discuss your options, and recommend when you should return based on your oral health and risk.

The right recall schedule for you

How Often?

Most patients do best with a cleaning and exam every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or are cavity-prone, a 3–4 month interval protects you better. We tailor your schedule to your risk — not a one-size-fits-all rule.

Understanding preventive benefits

Cost and Insurance

Many dental plans include preventive benefits. Coverage and frequency limits vary, so we’ll check your plan and explain your estimated cost. We can check your specific dental plan and treating dentist. If you do not have insurance, ask about payment options before your visit.

Common questions about preventive care

Do I really need X-rays?
X-rays help us assess areas that are difficult to see during an examination. We recommend them when appropriate for your symptoms, history, and risk, and can explain why a particular image is needed.
Why do I need cleanings if I brush and floss every day?
Plaque can harden into tartar, which requires professional removal. Cleanings and exams complement daily home care and help us identify changes in your oral health.
I haven't been to a dentist in years. Will I get lectured?
Never. We're glad you're here — that's the only thing that matters. You'll get a warm welcome, a gentle exam, and a clear, prioritized plan to get back on track.

Build your home care routine

The best routine is one you understand and can use every day. Start with two minutes of brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and daily cleaning between your teeth. Then choose any additional products around a specific need.

  • Make brushing easier. Explore powered brushing, including the timing and pressure features of Philips Sonicare ExpertClean.
  • Reach between teeth. Learn how a water flosser fits alongside brushing and how to choose between it, floss, and interdental brushes.
  • Match the product to the purpose. A rinse, fluoride gel, mineral paste, or dry-mouth gel may have a very different job from the bottle beside it. We'll help you understand which one belongs in your plan.

Bring your current products or a photo of their labels to your visit. We can go over your technique, explain a recommendation, and write down the instructions that apply to you.

Your Oral Health Guide

Small changes deserve a closer look

Early Decay and Oral Tissue Health

An early area of decay with an intact surface may have options beyond watching and waiting. Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus is a professional treatment for selected early, non-cavitated lesions. It supports mineral recovery; it does not fill an established hole. Your exam determines whether it fits, and follow-up shows how the area is responding.

We also want to hear about a sore, lump, or patch that persists or changes. Our oral cancer examination guide explains what a tissue check involves, what screening lights can and cannot tell you, and why a concerning finding may need further evaluation.
