A repair between a filling and a crown
What Are Inlays and Onlays?Sometimes a cavity is too large for a filling to fix reliably — but enough healthy tooth remains that full crown coverage may not be necessary. That's exactly what inlays and onlays are for. Both are custom restorations crafted in a dental lab from strong porcelain, then bonded precisely into your tooth. An inlay fits within the grooves between the cusps of a tooth, like a puzzle piece. An onlay goes further, covering one or more cusps — which is why it's sometimes called a "partial crown."
