Scaling and Root Planing

A deeper cleaning to help control periodontitis, with local anesthetic and visits planned around the areas needing treatment.

How periodontal cleaning works

What Is It?

Plaque can harden into tartar. When periodontitis affects the tissues around your teeth, a routine preventive cleaning does not replace periodontal treatment. Scaling removes plaque and tartar from tooth and root surfaces; root planing smooths root surfaces where needed. Treatment helps control infection and supports healing. We reassess your gums afterward to see whether further care is needed.

What to expect

The Process
1

Numbing First

We numb the areas being treated. You may feel pressure or vibration; tell us if you feel discomfort so we can pause and adjust.

2

Scaling

Using ultrasonic and hand instruments, your hygienist removes tartar and bacteria from above and below the gumline.

3

Root Planing

Root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed where needed. The areas treated at each visit depend on your care plan.

4

Healing and Re-Check

We recheck bleeding and gum measurements after healing to assess the response, discuss any further treatment, and plan maintenance visits.

Common questions about deep cleaning

Does scaling and root planing hurt?
We use local anesthetic and check your comfort during treatment. Mild tenderness can occur afterward; contact us if discomfort persists or worsens.
Is it covered by insurance?
Your plan may help cover treatment when its requirements are met. We’ll check benefits, any approval requirements, and your estimated share before treatment.
Why can't I just get a regular cleaning?
A routine preventive cleaning does not replace treatment for periodontitis. We’ll explain your gum measurements and why scaling and root planing is recommended.
